Benchdog SQL Search

Find any name, column or line of code in every database.

VS Code, desktop and command line. Windows, Mac and Linux. One licence covers all three.

Search the names, columns and code of tables, views, procedures and more across many SQL Server and Azure SQL databases at once, then open each match's script at its line. Only the catalog is read.

Search many databases at once

Tick the databases to search, type the text and press Enter. Benchdog searches four at a time and lists what it finds by database, then by object, with how many matches each has. One search covers them all, on every server you added.

One search, every database, grouped by object.

Names, columns and code

Find text in object names, the column names of tables and views, and every line of code in views, procedures, functions and triggers. Look in and Objects keep the search to the places and kinds you care about, from tables to synonyms, sequences and types.

Names, columns and code, each match shown where it was found.

Jump straight to the line

Pick a match to see its object's script, scrolled to the line, with every line that holds the text marked. Views, procedures, functions and triggers show their code as SQL Server keeps it, so the line numbers match. Tables, synonyms, sequences and types get a CREATE script.

Pick a match and the script opens at the line.

Match exactly what you mean

Match case, Whole word and Wildcards set how the text matches. Whole word finds @Order but not @OrderId. With Wildcards, * stands for any run of characters on one line and ? for any one character, so Cust*Id finds CustomerId.

Whole word, match case and wildcards, when you need them.

Reads the catalog, never your data

Only names, columns and the code SQL Server keeps are read, never a row of table data, and nothing in the database changes. Code that is encrypted, or needs VIEW DEFINITION to read, is listed as not searched, so you know what was left out.

Notes say which code could not be read.

One failure stops nothing

A database that can not be opened gets a red tag saying why, and every other database is still searched. A search stops at 2,000 matches and says so, so a short list is never mistaken for a full one.

A database that fails says why. The rest are still searched.

Save a search as a project

A *.sqlsearch.json project file keeps the databases, on one server or many, each with its own sign-in, and the search with its choices. Open it in VS Code, the desktop app or the command line to search again. It never holds a password.

A project file keeps the databases and the search, never a password.

Signs in as you

Azure SQL uses your Benchdog account, and SQL Server on your network can use your Windows account, so there is no password to type or store. For servers that only allow SQL logins, the password is kept in the system's secure store only when you tick Remember.

Windows, Entra or a SQL login. The password is never written to a file.
